German Exchange to Woodstock:
BackOn Tuesday 12th November we had the pleasure of welcoming 25 visiting students from Cologne and their 2 teachers who travelled by train from Cologne via Brussels to the UK. Each visitor was hosted for a week by one of our wonderful participating Marlborough families as part of our German Exchange programme.
During their stay, they had the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful sights of Blenheim Palace and explore historic Oxford including the Oxford Castle. They also enjoyed a fun-filled communal day trip touring the Harry Potter Film studios in Watford.
For the first time ever during the exchange, we also had the scope to treat all exchange students to the iconic tradition that is English Afternoon Tea. And yes, be in no doubt, with the full range of culinary treats (a selection of savoury sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes and of course scones with proper clotted cream and jam).
Of course, not all cultural learning has to be ‘fun’ to be valuable. The most poignant moment this year was when Mr Moss – our History Curriculum Leader - reminded us all during the Whole School Remembrance assembly, of the immense suffering and devastating human loss on both sides in WW2. A potentially sensitive topic, but a vital reminder to the impact of any war.
As students said their tearful goodbyes, we are looking forward to the second part of our exchange in Cologne.
