Governors
Welcome from the Joint Chair of Governors
We would like to introduce ourselves as joint Chairs of Governors at The Marlborough C of E School.
We have both been governors here at The Marlborough School for several years, and both have a background in education. Valerie lives is a retired Deputy Headteacher: most of her career has been spent working in senior leadership in West Oxfordshire. Kate has had two children go through the Marlborough School. She worked in primary education for 11 years as a class teacher, literacy coordinator and SLT member, going on to spend three years a SENCo. She has also worked for nearly 20 years in digital education publishing for several different publishing companies on a wide range of products and services. We work very closely together to lead the strategic direction of the governing board and we both meet regularly with the Principal and key members of the school leadership team.
The governing board at The Marlborough is made up of a small group of volunteers with a wide range of experience. We meet regularly to help support and challenge the work of the Leadership Team and are dedicated to achieving the very best outcomes for students.
The school’s governing board is responsible for:
-
Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school.
-
Holding the school leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of the school.
-
Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure money is well spent.
It is a strategic, rather than an operational role: what we do not do, is to make decisions on behalf of the school or get involved in planning: this is the job of school leaders. Our role is to challenge and support those school leaders by listening and asking questions and, where relevant, share our own perspectives and experiences.
The school’s outcomes and its reputation are strong: it continues to develop and grow. As Chairs of Governors, we are both very pleased and proud to be in a position to support that development, and to be able to work with such a dedicated and positive team.
There is more information about governors on this page of the website. If you would like to know more, please do contact either of us at chair@themarlboroughschool.org.
The Marlborough School is proud to be part of the River Learning Trust (RLT). Information about how governance works in RLT is available here
