Guidance on Internet Safety for Parents and Carers
Safe use of the internet: briefing for parents and carers
The school would recommend you use the links below as an entry point in the event that you have concerns regarding safe use of the internet by your children:
http://www.saferinternet.org.uk/
https://www.childline.org.uk/info-advice/bullying-abuse-safety/online-mobile-safety/sexting
http://swgfl.org.uk/products-services/esafety/resources
These links will provide detailed practical information and advice for parents and pupils across a wide range of matters relating to managing risks whilst using social media. They will also suggest related links which some parents will find useful to use with their children, including how to set security for widely used apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, twitter and Facebook, as well as newer ones such as ooVoo and Yik Yak which you can view at http://www.saferinternet.org.uk/advice-and-resources/young-people/11-19s
The school’s PHSCE programme includes early introduction to safe use of the internet to Year 7 pupils. During Years 7, 8 and 9 further information and guidance is provided as well as consideration of how social media can contribute to factors affecting young people, such as cyber-bullying, peer pressure, self-esteem and risky behaviours.
Safeguarding
The school maintains a high level of control and monitoring of school computers and pupils are not permitted to use mobile phones in school. The school cannot police pupils’ use of mobile phones outside of school, but inevitably there are occasions where pupils make ill-advised or inappropriate use of their phones and the consequences reach into their life in school. Responses to these incidents are undertaken within framework guidance provided by local and national safeguarding organisations and professional bodies.
Further guidance on cyberbullying and sexting is available here.
