Gold D of E Expedition: Conquering the Hills of South Wales!
On 2nd March, four groups of students set off on an unforgettable Gold Duke of Edinburgh Practice expedition through the stunning landscape of South Wales. Starting in Abergavenny, we took on the challenge of climbing the infamous Sugarloaf Mountain, initiating the beginning of an adventure filled with breathtaking views, arduous climbs, and plenty of laughter.

Our days consisted of being outdoors for a minimum of eight hours, tackling steep hills, winding trails, and even crossing streams using naturally occurring stepping stones! Although the terrain was quite challenging, moments like these made the journey even more exciting and memorable.

While the days were physically demanding, the nights brought a new challenge of staying warm. With temperatures dropping to -3°C, sleeping bags became our most loved possession. Cooking our own meals (mostly boil-in-the-bag dinners) was an experience in itself, and while the food was simple, the satisfaction of eating after a long day of walking made it taste amazing.

Ignoring the sore feet, cold nights, and aching legs, the Gold DofE expedition was one of the most rewarding experiences we’ve ever had. The long-lasting effect of the trip was really the community we slowly built along the way. Whether it was helping each other through demanding moments, sharing limited supplies, or having deep conversations during the long walks, we all left knowing each other a little better.

If you’re considering Gold DofE, definitely go for it. It’s an adventure you’ll surely never forget.
